1st round photo pick - Day 01 Pre-Opening

Okay, no prizes for remembering which photo won the 1st round. I was lucky I had these 14 pics given to me properly. So now how do I know which are the selected photos for other days?

Here are the leading verses for the Adults Camp this year for us to prepare ourselves spiritually.

Psalm 1:1-3 NIV

1 Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers.
2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night.
3 He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers.

Come and find out more about Building a Prevailing Generation. See you there!

Words from head of camp comm... to YOU

This should not sound like a Foreword to a book.

All because –

I am definitely NOT an expert in doing this, NOT an experienced writer.

I wrote no article to any newspaper column, no FOREword or Editor’s Note for HERWORLD or JUICE. I only write one-sentence memo in office (e.g. I am in the gents, etc)

Having reminded myself all these, however, it does not at the least bit dampen my excitement to begin writing about our upcoming camp.
----------
Let me start by telling you my wonderful committee.

Eugene Phang, he is an excellent brother, co-leading this camp with me. He has great planning and organizing skills and excellent yet humble to serve us. By the way, he loves hard pearl. The harder the tastier for him.

Programming, the creative and wacky Pei Key and Chris Goh.

Hospitality, the gentle and welfare-y Maggie and Eugene Tan.

Publicity, the no-bad-idea Sarah and Priscilla.

Ushering, the “siao” (smile in Chinese) team, Joseph and Sharmaine.

Media, the sure-delivery Meng Chong and Irene.

Logistics, the die-hard Jun Qiang and Yee Cheng. They went survey the camp coach waiting area and just to draw a map out for ensure good boarding sequence.

Workshop, the one-man Kevin. But he is a cool about having no one else beside.:p
----------------------------------------------

The whole committee is very excited about the camp. The planning was not easy, the selection of hotel, the camp fee negotiation, etc. BUT we felt God's favour is with us.

We wanted a strategic location and comfortable accommodation.

Strategic location because we want our campers to ease their planning for post-camp and pre-camp tour.

Comfortable accommodation because comfort is important. We teach not a persecuted or enduring church this time.

With our criteria in our mind, all the committee went 2 recee trips to KL, Melaka, Port Dickson on 2 Saturdays. We rushed back to S'pore for Sunday Services.

Equatorial Melaka showed up top in our search list. A 5-star hotel standing in the hub of Melaka City. Melaka City, 2-hr drive from KL and 3.5-hr from the Republic.

It is a business hotel “confronted” by a brand new shopping mall housing more than 30 (if not more) retail shops. No easy temptation for sisters and shopper brothers to “ponteng” camp.

Just few minutes away are many tourist’s attractions, A Famosa, Ruins of Saint Paul Church, the famous Chendol selling Jonker’s street, etc, you name it you have it

Equatorial Melaka is such cool place for our camp! Praise the Lord!

We also want every adult to come for the camp.

Because the camp is for ALL HOPE ADULTS to meet HIM in a deliberately set-apart manner!

Equatorial Melaka can house everyone of us. Even NEW and PRE-BELIEVERS.

We prayed for last Christmas and now Easter that WE would harvest plentifully. We scared NOT lack of space. We dare say and challenge any DISTRICT to bring all NEW BELIEVERS and PRE-BELIEVERS.

We will have enough rooms and big enough hall for YOU!

SO Register yourself late NOT.

As our buzz word goes, “BE an Effective christian, sign up early.”

Excited to seeing YOU in a great camp!

Hotel Equatorial Melaka

Recently, the troops from the Adults Camp Committee went up to Malacca again on 3rd March 2007. See the things we have to do for the greater good of all of you? Hehehehe...

And so we assembled early on Saturday morning at 7am outside the Cuppage Plaza entrance, awaiting for our tour guides Defferey and William to drive us up! Ohohoh... Mengchong and Sarah drove some of us up as well in Mengchong's car. After breezing through the causeway checkpoint which was like a ghost town so early in the morning, we arrived at the Hotel Equatorial in sunny Melaka.

We were ushered to the hotel cafe and while we waited for the hotel management, we were invited to order drinks to freshen up after our drive up. So we had our freshly brewed cappuccinos, lattes and Kenya AA fresh roast! (Yes, these are the little perks of being on camp committee- Recruitment starts again next year! hehehe!)

After freshening up, next on our agenda was to discuss logistics and technical details with the hotel management and technical staff. Ideas and suggestions were bantered around the room amidst our hunger pangs. When the dust settled, we moved on to have a little tour of the hotel and its meeting or ballrooms to have a better perspective in mind how we are going to execute our programs and workshops. Here's a sneak peek at the various nooks and corners of the hotel and some of its ballrooms:

We spotted a quaint little Peranakan restaurant that may house one of the workshops.

Think you have time for a swim this camp? Well, sure.. .here's the poolside. Remember to pack those goggles!
Another view of the poolside (Pic courtesy of Hotel Equatorial).
Wooo... looks lovely. (Pic of the deluxe room courtesy of Hotel Equatorial.)
Ok, enough scenic shots. Here's some evidence of us hard at work, checking out the ballrooms.

The main foyer to the Grand ballroom.

Half of the Grand Ballroom as the other half was in use.
One of the conference rooms for workshop (Disclaimer: Actual layout will differ from picture).
Another meeting room for workshop. (Disclaimer: Please see above disclaimer).

A new mall opposite Mahkota Shopping Centre, approximately 7 mins walk from the hotel. Looks a tad like the French Louvre, doesn't it?

Well, that's about it to this recce trip. Hehe. Obviously, we can't show you everything to keep the suspense alive ya? ;) And then it's back to Singapore for the Adults Camp Committee. Check back here for more updates as we countdown to Adults Camp 2007!

**Where oh where shall our camp be held?**

So on the assumption that you attend Hope Adults Church Camp year after year... Did it ever occur to you how the venue of the camp was decided? Did you ever wonder what in the world do the church camp committee members do? What goes on behind the scenes leading to the actual days of the camp itself? Ok, if you did not wonder about such things... heheh...I guess you may have taken both the camp and the church camp committee members for granted!! Heheh.. JUST KIDDING. =)

Here on this blog, we're going to tell you everything about Adults Church Camp 2007...how the venue was decided, how preparations and considerations were taken into account just to make Adults Church Camp 2007 an enjoyable camp filled with prevailing memories, teachings and experiences.... and of most of all an amazing encounter with God for each and everyone of us
during the camp.

And so it goes that one fine Friday night last year, 8th September 2006 it was, some of the church camp committee members went up to Malaysia for the one of many recce trip to find out more about the hotels we have narrowed down for our church camp this year.

We set off from Singapore after work and drove up all the way to Port Dickson to find out more about the Tiara Resort. We arrived in Port Dickson pretty late at about 2ish am and turned in. Here's a view of how the bedroom in Tiara's resorts looked like.

Not too bad, a pretty decent bedroom. However, with approximately 5 hours of journey time from Singapore to Port Dickson, we decided that it may be a tad too far to have the Adults church camp there. Thus, Tiara resort was not selected.

Next on the list was Palace of the Golden Horses. Now, some of you may have heard about this hotel and perhaps even visited this hotel before. It's a 6 stars hotel and it lives up to its name...almost every part of the hotel you can spot some horse statues, portraits, emblems... basically anything horse-related. Apparently the owner of the hotel was a horse lover and was really passionate about it. Check out the pics below and have a look yourself.

The mesmerising ceiling mural at the grand lobby

The Concierge of Palace of the Golden Horses

The centerpiece of attraction at the restaurant

Even the lamp piece in the bedrooms have horse motifs!

Well, needless to say, all of us fell in love with this place. However, fearing that all this pomp & luxuriant pleasantries would distract our campers from the main purpose, the camp committee felt it was safer not to host our adults camp here....well ok, honestly it was the cost and nothing else that was the deciding factor! We didn't want the camp to cost over $500!!!

So, after wiping the drool from our mouths, we moved on to the Grand Seasons Hotel K.L. The hotel looked pleasant and welcoming and we viewed the bedrooms. Here's a pic of the bedroom for your viewing...

Not too bad huh? HOWEVER...when we arrived at the main ballroom we were greeted by this view...

A pair of columns blocking the view of the stage! Unanimously, all the committee members said no way. Well, its wasn't because of any fengshui reasons but rather with an expected 800 campers this year in the main ballroom for most of the time, it will be very disruptive for half the people getting blocked by the 2 columns. So sadly the Grand Seasons Hotel was a no go as well.

And so with that, our recce trip ended without finding a suitable location. We all headed back to Singapore determined to continue scouring the continent for a suitable location! =)

Adults Camp 2007: "Building a Prevailing Generation"

The Adults Camp 2007 themed "Building a Prevailing Generation" begins on 14 June for 4 days and 3 nights.

The Camp shall take place at the Historic City in Malaysia, Malacca. While many of the adults remember the beachside experience last year at Rivera Bay, Malacca, this year the adults region will bring us to Hotel Equatorial, the easily eye-catching hotel situated at the hub of the city. This will be a camp of another feel in Malacca.

While you might wonder how this hotel and surrounding look like... do stay tuned for more......
